International Prison Education Day and the Commitment to Rehabilitation

Celebrating International Prison Education Day and the Commitment to Rehabilitation 🎈 📚

Every year on October 13th, the European Prison Education Association (EPEA) celebrates International Prison Education Day. This date is significant because it marks the day in 1989 when the Council of Europe first adopted a series of recommendations emphasizing the vital importance of education—formal, non-formal, and informal—for prisoners.
These foundational documents affirm a core belief: Education in prison is essential because it can offer people opportunities for personal growth, successful social reintegration, and, in general, reduce the risk of recidivism.

About the EPEA
The EPEA is an independent, non-governmental organisation (NGO) recognised by the Council of Europe. It comprises a network of dedicated professionals, including prison educators, administrators, governors, and researchers.
The organisation’s mission is to promote and develop education within prisons across Europe, aligning with the Council of Europe’s recommendations. EPEA works collaboratively with prison administrations but maintains complete independence to best further its aims.

The next EPEA training conference will take place in Skopje, North Macedonia, from November 11th to November 15th. This is an important opportunity for professionals to connect, share best practices, and advance the future of prison education.
